New Canaan Country School (NCCS) is a Pre-K through Grade 9 co-educational, independent day school serving approximately 570 students and 400 students during the summer that come from diverse communities across Fairfield and Westchester counties. Position Overview
The School Nurse supports and enhances the educational mission of New Canaan Country School by promoting, protecting, and improving the health and well-being of students and the broader school community. This role focuses on illness and injury prevention, early identification and management of health concerns, and the delivery of high-quality, student-centered nursing care.
The School Nurse is a licensed healthcare professional with expertise in preventive health, health assessment, care coordination, and referral processes. Serving as a key liaison among students, families, faculty, staff, community resources, and healthcare providers, the School Nurse helps foster a safe, healthy, and inclusive school environment.
This is a 12-month, year-round position and reports directly to the Director of Community Engagement. Hours for this position are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.
Salary Range: $90,000-$100,000
Key Responsibilities
Student Health Services & Clinical Care
Assess students and provide nursing care, first aid, and emergency interventions for students and staff as needed
Initiate and manage emergency response procedures in accordance with standing orders and school protocols
Perform nursing treatments in compliance with standing orders and individual physician orders
Administer medications in accordance with physician authorization, parent/guardian consent, and Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) regulations
Maintain accurate, timely documentation of all health office visits and interventions in the electronic medical record (EMR)
Perform general health screenings as appropriate (e.g., vision, hearing)
Health Records & Compliance
Collect, organize, maintain, and monitor comprehensive student health records required for school attendance and summer programs, including:
Health histories and developmental records
Immunization records
Physical examinations
Medication administration documentation
Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations, including Connecticut General Statutes, Connecticut DPH guidelines, HIPAA, and FERPA
Care Planning & Health Management
Develop, update, and implement Individualized Health Care Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Health Care Plans (EHCPs) for students with chronic or acute medical conditions
Participate in relevant planning and support meetings related to student health needs
Communicate appropriate health information to faculty and staff, collaborating to support classroom management of student medical conditions while maintaining confidentiality
Health Education, Training & Policy Development
Educate and train faculty and staff on student medical conditions, emergency procedures, and safety protocols
Provide medication administration training to designated staff as required
Assist in the development, review, and implementation of school health policies, procedures, and wellness initiatives
Employ evidence-based best practices in school nursing and public health
Operations, Collaboration & Supervision
Maintain a safe, organized, and well-equipped health office
Prepare and manage first aid kits for classrooms, field trips, athletics, and school events
Cultivate and maintain communication with the school’s on-call physician, including coordinating an annual review of standing orders, medications, and health policies
Work closely with the food service team to support students with food allergies, dietary restrictions, and related medical needs
Works closely with the Athletic Trainer
Collaborate with the School Psychologist, School Counselor, Athletic Trainer, and Director of Safety and Security as needed
Professional Practice
Maintain all required licensure, certifications, and continuing education in accordance with Connecticut regulations and school expectations
Attend required meetings and participate as an active member of the school community
Maintain a professional, compassionate, and student-centered demeanor
Perform other duties as assigned in support of a healthy, safe, and secure learning environment
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications, Experience & Training
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program
Registered Nurse as defined by Section 20-87a of the Connecticut General Statutes
Valid and current Connecticut Registered Nurse (RN) license
Minimum of three (3) years of Registered Nurse experience within the past five years
School nursing, public health, pediatrics, emergency department, or critical care experience preferred
Current CPR / First Aid / AED certification (Professional Rescuer level)
Concussion awareness and concussion management training
Working knowledge of medical equipment and basic pharmacology
Demonstrated ability to assess emergency situations and respond appropriately
Proficiency in professional nursing documentation, including electronic health records (EHR/EMR)
Strong computer skills, including EMR systems, productivity software, and Google Workspace
Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, and collaboration skills
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, sit, walk, bend, squat, kneel, climb, reach, and perform repetitive hand and body movements
Ability to lift students as required and maintain stamina to stand for extended periods
Capacity to respond effectively in emergency situations
