Position Overview
The General Counselor is the heartbeat of the Skiff Mountain experience. Responsible for the
daily well-being, safety, and engagement of a specific group of campers (grades 3-10), the General
Counselor acts as a mentor, role model, and "summer parent." In our choice-based environment,
you will guide campers through their self-selected schedules, foster a supportive residential
culture, and ensure every child feels seen, heard, and included.
Key Responsibilities
Camper Care & Community Building
- Living Group Leadership: Reside in a dorm with campers; manage daily routines
including wake-up, clean-up, meal times, and lights out. - Emotional Support: Identify and respond to camper needs, helping them navigate
homesickness, social dynamics, and personal growth. - Inclusion: Foster a bunk atmosphere of mutual respect where diverse backgrounds and
interests are celebrated.
Program Participation
- Choice-Based Guidance: Assist campers in navigating their schedules, encouraging
them to try new activities and step outside their comfort zones. - Activity Support: Join campers at various activity areas (sports, arts, waterfront, etc.)
to provide encouragement and extra supervision alongside Activity Leaders. - Special Events: Enthusiastically participate in camp-wide traditions, evening programs,
and color war events.
Safety & Supervision
- Maintain 24/7 "eyes-on" supervision of campers, ensuring all safety protocols are
followed. - Escort campers during transitions between activities to ensure punctuality and
accountability. - Report any health or behavioral concerns promptly to the Head Counselor or Camp
Nurse.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years of age (or have completed one year of college).
- Prior experience working with children (coaching, tutoring, or camp) is preferred.
- Ability to remain high-energy and patient in a fast-paced, outdoor environment.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a staff team.
