Company Overview
Hospital for Special Care (HFSC) is the fourth largest, free-standing long-term acute care hospital in the U.S. and one of only two in the nation serving both adults and children. Located in New Britain and Hartford, we operate on a not-for-profit basis. We are recognized for advanced care and rehabilitation in pulmonary care, acquired brain injury, medically-complex pediatrics, neuromuscular disorders, spinal cord injury, comprehensive heart failure and comprehensive inpatient and outpatient treatment for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.
We believe in keeping the same shared value of making our patients the center of what we do. You and/or your loved ones will receive individualized care where everyone works together in a multidisciplinary approach. Throughout every stage of recovery, both inpatient and outpatient, it is our goal to rebuild your physical, spiritual and emotional self.
Company History
1941: The first patient arrives on June 25.
1943: The New Britain Rest Home becomes The New Britain Memorial Hospital, Inc.
1950: The Rehabilitation Program begins with speech language voice therapy, physical and occupational therapy.
1953: State grants new license as a Hospital for Chronic Illness.
1963: Pediatric patients were first admitted
1977: Ventilator dependent patients are admitted.
1980: We become the leading edge of the Long Term Acute Care (LTAC) concept.
1993: The Neurobehavioral Program is created to treat individuals with behavior issues resulting from brain injuries.
1993: We become Hospital for Special Care.
1997: Our Spinal Cord Injury and Wound Management programs are formalized.
1998: The Adaptive Sports Program is established.
1999: We open our Aquatic and Fitness Center.
2002: Manes & Motions Therapeutic Riding Center becomes affiliated with us.
2004: A 28-bed satellite opens on the campus of Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center.
2007: Our outpatient Neuromuscular Center opens.
2011: The eight-bed Cardiac Medical Unit opens, offering rehabilitation for LVAD (left ventricular assist device) and congestive heart failure patients.
2012: The Autism Center opens, providing outpatient services to children on the autism spectrum.
2015: We open the first inpatient Autism unit in the state.
2018: The Autism Center earns the highest recognition as the Nation’s First Level Three Patient Centered Specialty Practice (PCSP).

Accreditations
We have been accredited by The Joint Commission since 1963, demonstrating over 50 years of meeting high quality standards in our services and programs.
In 2015 our Autism Center was named the nation’s first Patient-Centered Specialty Practice (PCSP) for Autism Spectrum Disorder. PCSP designation is determined by the National Committee for Quality Assurance, the most widely adopted medical home model in the country. NCQA recognized the Autism Center at HFSC for its responsiveness to patients and medical colleagues, its cooperation and integration with other health care groups, and its dedication to continuous improvement. In 2018 our Center became the first level-three PCSP in the country, the highest recognition that a specialty practice can achieve. In addition the NCQA has recognized our Gawlicki Family COPD Disease Management program as the nation’s first and only PCSP in 2018.
Our Department of Neuromuscular Medicine Electromyography (EMG) Laboratory is Accredited with Exemplary Status by the AANEM Electrodiagnostic (EDX) Laboratory Accreditation.
Our Neuromuscular Center is recognized as a Certified Treatment Center of Excellence by the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association.
Our Neuromuscular Center is designated as a Certified Center of Excellence by the Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation.
Our Neuromuscular Center is recognized as a Certified Center of Excellence by the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
The Neuromuscular Center is recognized as a Certified Center of Excellence by the the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association.
Manes & Motions Therapeutic Riding is a Certified Professional of the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International.
